So this one is a late post… hmmm let’s see, back on March 29th I got to participate in a photo shoot for project carefree bmw. What is that you ask? A movement started by poet Sadiyah Bashir and photographer Soda Ahmed to embrace the culture, religion and beauty of the Black Muslim Woman. To watch the full video click here.
What did I wear to this photo shoot you ask? Great question! I finally got to wear my Amanda Valentine Maxi color block dress!!! Ok who watches project runway? If you do, you’ll know who Amanda Valentine is. She went to fashion week in the finale and had two maxi dresses. I LOOOOOVED both of them, they are so bohemian chic. Anyhow I stalked her website until she put them for sale, and I got one. I love this dress. Quite honestly though, I was nervous about how this dress would look on me since I’m not a size 0 you know. A couple of my friends thought it would look like a sheet on me. Well I took a chance anyway because I loved it so much and I think it looks ok. What do you think? Oh and by the way, how fabulous is this necklace?? My friend got it for me as a gift and I LOVE it!
The Amanda Valentine color block maxi. Original on the left and me on the right :).
Oh my gosh it’s been awhile right? This crazy winter weather made it so hard for me to take pics. Anyhow, FINALLY it seems like Spring is trying to show up. This past weekend I attended a fashion show put on by the International Sisters Network. Since the models weren’t covered we weren’t allowed to take pics of the runway show to post, however, I totally love the outfit that I wore and want to share it with you, also there were some pretty fashionable ladies there and I’ll post a couple of pics of them too. The dress I wore was made by a woman I found on IG (Instagram ). She is a seamstress and posts when she gets new fabrics so that you can place an order with her. So it’s always scary to buy something from someone off IG, but luckily I knew someone who had purchased from her before so I went for it! Quick delivery and she was quick to respond to any of my questions. Check out her IG page @clothingbyshe to see more of her work. To place orders you can email her at email@example.com, or call 484-995-9833 between the hours of 9am-8pm est. Since it was a bit windy I also wore a cape. This awesome cape is from here. I won the cape in an instagram giveaway and I LOVE it. In my opinion, capes are so chic and can make any outfit look elegant. So what better to wear to a fashion show? I have to say there is nothing like getting clothes made for your body, they fit perfectly, this dress and this cape are well made and beautiful material! Hope you like the pics….(By the way it was super windy that day lol)… also posting pics of some lovely fashionistas.
Look at this cutie Sophia! Loving her mint green maxi dress, she’s ready for spring.
One of my best best friends Hayya, gorgeous in blue!
All black everything! My sister from another mother Jenea, wearing a tulle skirt. These are so in right now. I love how she wore it with a leather vest, mixing hard and soft.
Got to meet up with YouTuber/ fashionista/ Poet Sadiya. She’s an amazing woman! Check out her IG page @kinghijabpin or her Tumblr Kinghijabpin

One thing I absolutely love about her is that she makes a lot of her own clothes. Watching her YouTube videos, she makes sewing look so incredibly easy. This beautiful skirt for example was made out of a bed sheet. UNBELIEVABLE!!! And amazing !DIYers like her have inspired me to try to branch out and see if I can make some of my own clothes….stay tuned lol. Seriously though being tall sometimes I can’t find certain things long enough for me. So seeing people make their own beautiful clothes is Inspiring. Thanks @nadira037 !
Hope you had a wonderful weekend, the weather was gorgeous! This is going to be a short post… so one challenge I have is figuring out what to wear on the weekends. 80% of my wardrobe is work wear and so on the weekends I’m always trying to figure out what to wear. Recently I started just wearing shirtdresses with cardigans, or work shirts with cardigans and jeans. Here is what I wore this past weekend. Most of these items are old so I don’t have links for them, but the stores I got them from area always selling similar stuff. The top is a sleeveless shirt dress from Old Navy last summer, Cardigan is from Target, Boots from Famous foot wear and the jeans from Long Tall Sally from like 8 years ago lol.
I meant to post this blog sooner but have been so busy, anyhow, I was super excited to do an interview with Hijab trendz. Click Here to read the interview! Check it out, the Hijab Trendz blog is great!
What I found since starting this blog, is that it isn’t just Muslim ladies that want to dress modestly, but women from other faiths as well. Mimumaxi is a company run by two Jewish women who have similar views about fashion and modesty that many in the modest fashion industry have. That just because one wants to hold true to their values, it doesn’t mean that they can’t also express their individuality and be stylish as well.
Ok so back to the skirt legging… so while scouring IG for something cool and innovative to wear I found Mimumaxi and something they referred to as a skirt legging… I went to their website to check it out. They describe it as “the Skirt Leggings are entirely a skirt, but have the “feel” and versatility of a good pair of leggings“… hmmmm ok so I had to try them out and promptly ordered a pair. Below are two different ways that I styled them. The first is a winter look with an oversized sweater and boots. The second could be worn in the spring or fall or really anytime of the year, but with spring approaching, I will probably wear it then and maybe with sandles instead of boots. Let me just say that the skirt legging is exactly how it is described on the website. It is soft and stretchy and I really like it. I have to wear it with a long top though because it is fitted on the hips butt area and since I’m a bit “curvy”, I’m more comfortable with it covered, otherwise it looks just like leggings look when worn with a short top yikes! not for me lol…. anyhow here are my pics… the skirt legging can be found at http://www.mimumaxi.com/#!what-are-skirt-leggings/cooe.
I wanted to take some professional pictures in some of my favorite dresses. I got to work with the wonderful Ayesha Cheema for these pictures. This dress is from http://www.longtallsally.com, however, I got it a few years ago, so I don’t think it is available anymore. It is good quality and has lasted me a long time. I’ll wear it then put it up in the closet for a couple of years before bringing it out again.
I was so fortunate to have won a dress in a giveaway from a designer I found in Instagram. This dress is SO very pretty!! Zubaidah specializes in dresses for curvy women (of which I am one)! When I first got the dress, I noticed the zipper was in the front. I thought hmmmm this is odd, but tried it on anyway. Well how ingenious of her to put the zipper in the front. The zipper along with the darts made the dress fit like a glove. It gave the dress character especially since many of the long sleeve maxi’s all have a very similar design. Below are some pictures. I absolutely LOVE this dress, and have already worn it twice. I cannot wait to order another one!
This is a double blog post. First let’s talk about this new hijab. Instagram is so wonderful. I happend upon another instagrammer, who has just started making a new innovative hijab called, the button closed hijab. This idea was born out of frustration of not being able to find her hijab pins. I was lucky enough to be able to try out this new scarf and review it. Here is what I think:
The color of course was fabulous!! The material was nice as well, similar to the jersey scarfs so it was nice and clingy. This hijab was definately VERY easy to use, and the best part was, I didn’t have to search for my pins! I know some may not like the button on the side, for me though I thought it was different, unique and added some character. I would love to see this hijab expanded and made with different kinds of materials especially for the summer, some thin light weight cotton-ish material would be nice I think. Also I would like some longer ones for those sisters that like to wear maxi hijabs. Lastly, I think it would be cool to have different button styles. Maybe some sparkly or shimmery for dressier scarfs, maybe metallic to give them an edgeier feel. I would definately recommend this to a friend, and can’t wait to wear it again. To order this hijab visit www.haleemasboutique.com.
The outfit I’m wearing in these pictures is perfect for a casual day on the weekend. Denim on denim seems to never go out of style. I know everyone is wearing skinny jeans, but this day I opted for a wide-leg jean. I love a wide leg pant! I added a belt to break it up and not look big and puffy all over, and to cinch in the waist. Added a couple of accessories, and voila! Here are some pictures:
