HijabFest!

Hello!

Ok so I’m super excited about the next couple of blog posts. On September 13th I went to Hijabfest in New Jersey. But what is Hijabfest you may be asking?? So that I do not misquote things, here is an excerpt from the Hijabfest website. “HijabFest is a celebration of one of the largest markers of faith, the head-covering Muslim women wear in obedience to their Lord. It was launched in 2013 by the New Brunswick Islamic Center community, and is not entering its third year. HijabFest is an annual event held in New Brunswick and a Facebook page that shares uplifting stories about women in hijab.” This year the theme was unlocking the potential within. There were speakers discussing body image- which I loved because many of us struggle with body image. And at the end new hijabis were brought up to the stage and crowned. So sweet!

This celebration includes fashion shows that showcase modest designers collections, a bazaar, lunch, contests, cook-off and more. I was super excited because I wanted to go last year but couldn’t due to a scheduling conflict. So this year, I not only attended, I also was able to model, and cover the event for my blog. it was sooooo fun…

So let’s start off giving an overview of the event. The Fest started off with the opening of the Hijab salon and the #OOTD contest (which went on until later in the afternoon). Here is the winner! Gorg right?

I must say that I missed the beginning of the show as I was back stage getting makeup done and getting ready to be in the fashion show… omg so exciting aaaak!  Ok ok, so apparently I missed a presentation by Suzy Ismail and Sara Zayed about the potential within us. I was in the very first show modeling for one of my favs Styled by Zubaidah. If you have been following my blog for a while you’ll know I’ve posted about her before. She makes designes specializing in sizes 12-22 and I think recently has branched out to smaller size 10. Her dresses are so pretty. Here is a pic of me on the runway! And pics of Zubaidah and models.

Since I only modeled in the first show, I got to cover the rest of the event and it was great! Other designers that showed in the fashion show were Aabideen, B.Zarina, Graffiti and Gold, Amelia Designs, Beaute Cache, Guzel, Bulbul clothing, Paradise Fashion and Urban Modesty. Click on the names and they link to the websites (if they have a website). You should definitely check all of the designers out! Here are some videos of the runway and of the designs so you can judge for yourself.

So in addition to the fashion show, blogger Sobi Masood Gave a presentation on how to work trends into your wardrobe. Here are a few clips of that. Also go check out Sobi on IG at sobi1canobi. Also sorry if the videos are out of order… editing this was kind of craaaazy lol.

Lastly I got to meet one of the faces behind Woahjabi project- see their facebook page for more details, aaaand I got to see the beautiful Abrar who is a hijabi that won best dressed at her public high school aaaaand Mariana from The Demurist aaaaand Saniyyah from Curiostyling aaaaand Jannah from Jannahnaimacollection! ok Clearly you can tell I was excited correct? LOL, see the pics and links to social media/websites for the bloggers, designers, stylists below. HijabFest was a blast and I cannot wait until next year! Thank you organizers for giving me access!

💕Work Wednesday💕

Good afternoon! Today’s a big day, the pilgrims are on Arafat, the Pope is in town, and it’s Yom Kippur! Lots of stuff happening, unfortunately for me it’s just another humdrum work day. Oh yea also it’s the first day of Autumn! Sooooo for today’s work Wednesday I wore autumn colors and also pulled these items waaaaay out the back of my closet lol. And now that I’m looking, it totally has a 70s vibe. This nice flowy top is from H&M, the blazer is oooooold from Lane Bryant and the pants are from Long Tall Sally.

Eid Mubarak!

Fashion Blogger Friday: Interview with Leena

Hello guys!!! So as you know it’s been Fashion week in New York City, so for today’s fashion blogger Friday, I’m going to post my interview with the lovely Leena who attended NYFW! Leena was so nice to take time from her busy schedule to answer a few questions for me. If you haven’t heard of Leena, check out her blog here. So let’s get started!

Me: I know you have been blogging for awhile now, is this your first time going to a fashion week?
Leena: Yes, this is my first time!
Me: How did you go about attending NYFW? And which shows did you attend?
Leena: I was given the opportunity to attend this year after being invited by Betsey Johnson, Desigual, Mara Hoffman, and Noon by Noor!
Me: Did you get to decide which shows you attended?
Leena: It was invitation only so I was not able to decide!
Me: Were you able to meet designers and other bloggers? If so, how were you received?
Leena: I did meet other influencers and they really respected my modest dress and received me really well! I got a lot of compliments on my outfits and everyone was super nice!
Me: Were there any other Hijabis there?
Leena: Yes there were other hijabi bloggers there, I was really proud that we were there to represent!
Me: How would you describe your overall experience? Which was your favorite show/designer?
Leena: My overall experience was exciting and fun! I would love to go again!
Me: If you could attend any fashion show, which one would it be?
Leena: I would have loved to attend Tadashi Shoji! So many modest evening gown inspirations!
Me: Were there any designers that you found particularly inspiring for your own aesthetic ?
Leena: I loved the femininity and grace of the Noon by Noor show!
Me:Do you feel that mainstream fashion designers are becoming more receptive to making modest pieces/collections  that would target a population of consumers that adhere to certain dress requirements? (Not just Muslims of course but also Jewish, Christians and others as well.)
Leena: On the runway there was nothing that was 100% hijabi friendly, but there were definitely pieces that we could incorporate into our wardrobe!!
Me:Do you plan to go back to NYFW or to attend other fashion weeks even possibly internationally ?
Leena: Yes I would love to if I have the opportunity!
Leena’s outfits were absolutely elegant and chic. Below are some pictures of what she wore, and to see more, visit her blog! Lastly, in a previous conversation I asked Leena for advice for beginner bloggers. I thought this was great advice, so if any of you are thinking of starting a blog, check out the tips she gave me, which I found to be valuable advice!
” My advice would be to have clear pictures, stick to your personal style always, be unique, make sure you are absolutely in love with everything you post, hashtag on instagram so that you can be seen more often, do collabs with other bloggers to get your name out there, and be patient because it takes time to build a following and establish yourself. Good luck and lots of love!!”
Leena definitely has her own sense of personal style! I hope you enjoyed this interview, and talk to ya soon! Stay tuned, DC Fashion week is coming up, more to come….

Work Wednesday

Hello!

So I’m going to try something new and hopefully this will help me get into a regular blogging schedule. You may know already that I do something called Fashion Blogger Fridays where I share different fashion bloggers that I have come across and like. Now I’m adding Work Wednesdays. These posts will be work wear, and I’ll share links and ideas about different options to wear to work. Since the majority of my clothes are work wear I thought this may be kind of fun. Soo without further adieu, below are pictures of today’s outfit. Most of these pieces are old so the stores where I bought them probably do not have them anymore. They are basic pieces though that can be found anywhere. This is just a simple black top and pants that I jazzed up a bit with a stripe blazer and brightly colored bag. Very simple and comfortable, but office appropriate.325

Blazer: From Target, however, it is from a year ago, similar blazers can be found here or for a more affordable version here.

The top: A sleeveless black blouse, similar ones can be found almost anywhere, I like this one from H&M.

Pants: Wide leg black pants form NY&Co that are like 8 years old. A good pair of pants are an investment! Similar pants can also be found anywhere, I also like these from H&M.

Lets not forget about the bag! What better way to add a pop of color than with a bag? This fuscia bag is from ShopTarb. I don’t think there are any like this one being sold right now, BUT there is the Illa Lane collection for sale now and they are Fabulous, so check it out!

Let’s jump for jumpsuits :)

Jumpsuits are so on trend this summer. I’ve always loved jumpsuits, but until recently I never wore them because they were never long enough for me, can you say HIGHWATERS! lol…Last summer I got my first jumpsuit from Long Tall Sally, and this year more sites have been selling them for us tall-ies! I love them. They are cool in the summer and allow for the breeze to help beat the heat. Below are some of the jumpsuits I have been wearing. I like them made from cotton or viscose. One is made from polyester and the material doesn’t breath as much on really hot days.

This jumpsuit is from Long Tall Sally. I got it last year sometime so there are no more just like this, however, they do have other jumpsuits on sale now here. This one is polyester, so doesn’t breath as well as the other jumpsuits featured. But I still like the designs on it, and most importantly, it FITS!

The next two suits are from Alloy Apparel. This one, the Rachel wide leg jumpsuit can be found here. I absolutely love this one. The material is thin but not see through, and breathable so definitely good for hot weather. Best of all inseam is 37in! Long enough for me to wear with heels if I want! In fact in these pics I’m wearing 3in wedges. Don’t worry it also comes in regular length. I paired it with a thin cardigan (since it is sleeveless) from Target, perfect for layering in hot weather since it is thin material. I hate wearing thick cardigans when it’s hot out. I also love the tribal like design on this one. 037 041

Last but not least is yet another jumpsuit I got from Alloy Apparel. This one is also made from thin cottony material that catches the breeze nicely. I wanted a solid color as well as a pattern, so I chose this one because who doesn’t like an olive green? It’s a neutral so can go with pretty much anything, which is great for me since I have lots of colored and patterned cardigans that I wear to work. I have worn this jumpsuit to work with heels and a black cardigan, but in these pics I dressed more casual for the weekend with a peach cardigan from Old Navy. Old Navy and Target both sell seasonal cardigans- thinner in the summer and thicker for the fall/winter months. Added a peach lace scarf around my neck from Styled by Zubaidah for neck coverage. This particular jumpsuit is sold out, but a similar one can be found here.496 507 497

If you haven’t heard of ESHAKTI, you must read this!

So I’ve been waiting to do this blog post for awhile and I’m very excited about it. Eshakti is one of my absolute favorite places to get dresses. I mean I could basically be their poster child as much as I’ve been ordering from them and screaming from the rooftops how much I love them. I’ve been ordering from Eshakti for like 8 or 9 years now. In fact I found them randomly while searching for a website for tall maxi dresses. Because I’m 5’10” it is challenging to find maxi dresses that come to the floor (how I like them). So basically I have been ordering from them before everyone knew about them lol.  Anyway, why do I love this website so much???

  1. They sell sizes 0-36W!!! I mean seriously is that a range or what? Almost anyone can find their size, and if you can’t, that brings me to the second reason why I love Eshakti.
  2. Custom sizing!!! You can put in your measurements and they will make the garment to your measurements. You would think that would be super expensive, but NO, custom sizing is only an additional $7.50 to the price of the garment. And if it is your first time ordering custom is free.
  3. Custom styling options. Ok if the affordable custom sizing wasn’t a sell, this will be. Most garments have a custom style option, for example you can change the sleeves, or neckline or even length. I looooooove this because I can add sleeves to a sleeveless dress.
  4. Lastly, if use promotion code “faiscloset”  you can get an additional 10% off!!!! (Valid from 6/23/15-7/23/15)

If I didn’t say it already, you MUST check out Eshakti! Whether you are tall, or short, skinny or curvy, you can definitely find something on this website. Here are some of the dresses that I have ordered and had custom made. I also included the original picture of the dress so you can see the changes I got. I would say the only “con” if you call it a con, is that because every item is custom made you cannot get express or overnight delivery. I have found delivery takes anywhere from 2-4 weeks depending on what it is I ordered. So if you have an event coming up you would need to plan ahead. They do send you a tracking number once your order has shipped and if you have an issue you can return the item. I also found customer service to be great. They quickly respond to emails. Oh and I must not forget to mention the quality of the materials used. I have a couple of dresses I ordered like 5 years ago and they are still in perfect condition as if I just ordered them.

This is a Cowl neck stripe knit maxi. I had sleeves added to this dress. The left is how the dress was on sale on the website. The right is how I wore it with sleeves. This dress is a cotton knit and feels very cool for the summer. This one isn’t lined, but it isn’t see through either. Unfortunately this dress is out of stock at the moment, but they frequently bring styles back.

This is the Cowl neck hacci knit maxi dress. Again this dress was originally sleeveless and I opted for sleeves. Material is a stretchy knit so I didn’t custom size the arms because I figured with stretchy material it would fit and it did! This dress is very thin and cool for summer, however you need a slip because it is almost a bit see through depending on the lighting. Here is a link to this dress. http://www.eshakti.com/shop/Dresses/Cowl-neck-hacci-knit-maxi-dress-CL0035715

Another view of this dress. I love how the dress color looks different in different lighting. Here I wore it with a cardigan for work. Oh and did I mention it has POCKETS?! Pockets are a custom styling option on most dresses too, so if you don’t like them you can opt to remove them, but who doesn’t love pockets?

170

Sorry the pic on the left is blurry. Here is the Cowl neck abstract print jersey dress. Another sleeveless dress I got sleeves added to. This dress is lined so no need for layering and it has a bit of a stretch. I usually get length “full length with 3 in heels” to ensure the dress will be long enough for me. This one I could wear with flats if I wanted. It can be found here- http://www.eshakti.com/shop/Dress/Cowl-neck-abstract-print-jersey-maxi-dress-CL0035857

Close-up of the details of the dress. This dress is also a stretchy knit. This one has lining so it is not see through. Bag is from http://www.shoptarb.com/ . Shoes are Steve Madden.

It also has POCKETS! And cute belt detailing.

Chic Shop DMV

Hello guys! I feel like I’m always apologizing to you all for taking so long to post! I really need to post more often. This post is kind of a long one so forwarning you all! Remember last post (Leggy Luncheon) where I mentioned I had a busy weekend? Well on Sun 4/26 I went to Chic Shop DMV that was presented by Hakeemah (Cover me Beautiful) and Areej Fashions.  Chic Shop DMV was a fashion, craft, and beauty bazaar, which means it was right up my alley lol. There were so many vendors there, I tried to get pictures of most of them so that I could post them here.

So let’s get started. The bazaar was at Thurgood Marshall Center in Washington DC. When I arrived, there was a chalk drawing outside at the entrance which was a cute way to let people know they were in the correct place. Once you entered and registered, there was a food room that had vendors selling bean pies, cupcakes in jars, smoothies, chocolate and other sweets. There was also a table where people were preparing hot food.

093 094

When I entered the actual room where the vendors were, there was so much to see! Tables were set up with people selling all kinds of things from clothing and accessorires, to all natural beauty products like body butter and soaps etc. Below are pictures of some of the tables with links to their websites IF I was able to get that information.  I went around to each table and ended up buying some body butter, soap, scarfs, two bracelets, and a clutch. They also had people doing henna, a hot hula class I think, and a picture stand where you could get a professional picture taken. Everyone was very nice and prices were reasonable. I can’t wait for the next one!

Sorry this picture is blurry. I ended up buying one of the body butters from Wanderlust. She makes all her own from all natural organic products. The one I got had a light citrusy smell. I haven’t used it yet, but it smells wonderful.
