Fashion For a Cause

As I said in my previous blog post, I’m SUPER excited about this one! Last week I got to cover the Fashion With Compassion event. This year the FWC event was held at the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Virginia. You may be asking what is Fashion with Compassion?? First off, let me just let you know that this is going to be a long post, so get prepared. Secondly, FWC is an event put on by F.A.I.T.H. (Foundation for appropriate and immediate temporary help) to raise money for survivors of domestic violence. How amazing is that? Here is a blurb from FAITH’s website with a description of what they are about.

“FAITH Social Services began at the All Dulles Area Muslim Society (ADAMS) Center, as an informal group of volunteers assisting those in need. In October 1999,  FAITH Social Services was formally established. For the past 15 years, FAITH has been able to uplift people from poverty and domestic abuse and put them on the path towards self-sufficiency. FAITH assists low-income people with emergency and temporary assistance needed to address the consequences of a traumatic event or time in their life. In addition, FAITH’s Self-Sufficiency Program offers individuals and families with case management, housing, assistance with processing applications for rent, medical expenses, transportation, food, utilities, education, childcare and other forms of assistance.FAITH also promotes stable families by providing victims of domestic violence with crisis counseling, safety planning, legal representation, court advocacy, translation services, financial assistance and support from the moment they leave an abuser to the point where they are settled in a new situation. FAITH considers the needs of every person in a client’s family and works to place each of them solidly on the path towards self-sufficiency.” To check out more and to see how you can help out go here.

I think this is an amazing organization and such a great cause, because domestic violence is still taboo to talk about and address in certain communities. So Fashion with compassion is not only a fashion show, but also a pop up shop event with vendors selling clothing, jewelry, scarfs, doing makeup etc. The show was hosted by Isra Chaker, a “social activist promoting change and fighting for the rights of those in need across the world”.  Isra is amazing, she is the Syrian American liaison to Congress and the United Nations and global ambassador for the UN refugees and works agency. To see what she is up to, follow her on IG or FB @israspeaks.

Before the show started, attendees walked around and shopped in the pop up shop, some got their make-up done by the makeup artist who was there. Light refreshments were served as well. After shopping and mingling, everyone entered the hall for the fashion show. The fashion show showed looks from Simply Zeena, B.Zarina, Dana Ramey, Roddiva Couture, Gulshaan, and Madeena. Oh and of course let me not forget, a couple of highlights of the show were the singer Abir and Sadiyah Bashir performed a spoken word poem about a survivor of domestic violence. A short video clip of Abir singing is posted below. Also below are pictures and videos from both the pop up shop and the fashion show. I’ll tell you the pop up shop had some great designers. Definitely check them out. I added links for most if not all their websites or social media accounts.

Fashion Blogger Friday: Interview with Leena

Hello guys!!! So as you know it’s been Fashion week in New York City, so for today’s fashion blogger Friday, I’m going to post my interview with the lovely Leena who attended NYFW! Leena was so nice to take time from her busy schedule to answer a few questions for me. If you haven’t heard of Leena, check out her blog here. So let’s get started!

Me: I know you have been blogging for awhile now, is this your first time going to a fashion week?
Leena: Yes, this is my first time!
Me: How did you go about attending NYFW? And which shows did you attend?
Leena: I was given the opportunity to attend this year after being invited by Betsey Johnson, Desigual, Mara Hoffman, and Noon by Noor!
Me: Did you get to decide which shows you attended?
Leena: It was invitation only so I was not able to decide!
Me: Were you able to meet designers and other bloggers? If so, how were you received?
Leena: I did meet other influencers and they really respected my modest dress and received me really well! I got a lot of compliments on my outfits and everyone was super nice!
Me: Were there any other Hijabis there?
Leena: Yes there were other hijabi bloggers there, I was really proud that we were there to represent!
Me: How would you describe your overall experience? Which was your favorite show/designer?
Leena: My overall experience was exciting and fun! I would love to go again!
Me: If you could attend any fashion show, which one would it be?
Leena: I would have loved to attend Tadashi Shoji! So many modest evening gown inspirations!
Me: Were there any designers that you found particularly inspiring for your own aesthetic ?
Leena: I loved the femininity and grace of the Noon by Noor show!
Me:Do you feel that mainstream fashion designers are becoming more receptive to making modest pieces/collections  that would target a population of consumers that adhere to certain dress requirements? (Not just Muslims of course but also Jewish, Christians and others as well.)
Leena: On the runway there was nothing that was 100% hijabi friendly, but there were definitely pieces that we could incorporate into our wardrobe!!
Me:Do you plan to go back to NYFW or to attend other fashion weeks even possibly internationally ?
Leena: Yes I would love to if I have the opportunity!
Leena’s outfits were absolutely elegant and chic. Below are some pictures of what she wore, and to see more, visit her blog! Lastly, in a previous conversation I asked Leena for advice for beginner bloggers. I thought this was great advice, so if any of you are thinking of starting a blog, check out the tips she gave me, which I found to be valuable advice!
” My advice would be to have clear pictures, stick to your personal style always, be unique, make sure you are absolutely in love with everything you post, hashtag on instagram so that you can be seen more often, do collabs with other bloggers to get your name out there, and be patient because it takes time to build a following and establish yourself. Good luck and lots of love!!”
Leena definitely has her own sense of personal style! I hope you enjoyed this interview, and talk to ya soon! Stay tuned, DC Fashion week is coming up, more to come….

Work Wednesday !

Hi guys!

I meant to post this last night but wasn’t able to. Time just goes by so fast doesn’t it? Well this is my 2nd work Wednesday blog. Today I made one of my weekend casual looks work appropriate. The pants are jogger pants and I usually wear them on the weekend with some sandals. For work I just added a blazer and heels. Adding a blazer and heels can transform most outfits from being super casual to either work appropriate or for going out for a night on the town.

Here is the look when I wear it on the weekend.

And here it is when I added the blazer and heels for work.

Blazer is from target but a cuter one can be found here.

Bag is Ann Klein, here it is in yellow.

Pants are Eshakti and this was my first time getting pants from them. I love them, perfect for summer because the material is cool and breathes. They don’t have anymore in this design, but here is a similar pair.

Chic Shop DMV

Hello guys! I feel like I’m always apologizing to you all for taking so long to post! I really need to post more often. This post is kind of a long one so forwarning you all! Remember last post (Leggy Luncheon) where I mentioned I had a busy weekend? Well on Sun 4/26 I went to Chic Shop DMV that was presented by Hakeemah (Cover me Beautiful) and Areej Fashions.  Chic Shop DMV was a fashion, craft, and beauty bazaar, which means it was right up my alley lol. There were so many vendors there, I tried to get pictures of most of them so that I could post them here.

So let’s get started. The bazaar was at Thurgood Marshall Center in Washington DC. When I arrived, there was a chalk drawing outside at the entrance which was a cute way to let people know they were in the correct place. Once you entered and registered, there was a food room that had vendors selling bean pies, cupcakes in jars, smoothies, chocolate and other sweets. There was also a table where people were preparing hot food.

When I entered the actual room where the vendors were, there was so much to see! Tables were set up with people selling all kinds of things from clothing and accessorires, to all natural beauty products like body butter and soaps etc. Below are pictures of some of the tables with links to their websites IF I was able to get that information.  I went around to each table and ended up buying some body butter, soap, scarfs, two bracelets, and a clutch. They also had people doing henna, a hot hula class I think, and a picture stand where you could get a professional picture taken. Everyone was very nice and prices were reasonable. I can’t wait for the next one!

Sorry this picture is blurry. I ended up buying one of the body butters from Wanderlust. She makes all her own from all natural organic products. The one I got had a light citrusy smell. I haven’t used it yet, but it smells wonderful.

FASHION BLOGGER FRIDAY

Happy Friday!!!!

So on my instagram page I have been doing something called Fashion blogger Fridays. My take on #fbf, instead of flashback Fridays.  Today I thought, why not post on my blog as well for those of you who do not follow me on IG or FB, I can still share these wonderful bloggers with you! Normally I will post one about one fashion blogger each Friday, but today I will post all of the bloggers that I have posted the past few weeks to catch you all up. Today I featured Fabhima She is one of my most favorite fashion bloggers. Her sophisticated chic style is so fabulous and gives homage to style icons from the 50s and 60s. She pulls off styles that I wish I could ! Her instagram page is @fabhima, or you can check out her blog here.140

135

Deeqa is the very first fashion blogger that I featured for FBF. She is one of the most unique fashion bloggers I have found so far.  Her style in her own words can be described as “authentic, creative and bold”. She wears a lot of vintage looks and many of them are self made.  She pulls her inspiration from her mother’s closet, Audrey Hepburn, and Sarah Jessica Parker.  Her blog can be found here.136

Leena was one of the first fashion bloggers I started following. I love her style, its impeccable.  Not only is she one of the cutest bloggers out there, she’s so sweet.  She answered my questions since I’m new to blogging (whereas some bloggers totally ignore you lol). Beautiful and caring, great combo! Her blog is found here.137

I like to get ideas and inspiration from all kinds of bloggers. This day I featured Tanesha. Her blog was named best curvy blog in 2012 and she has a collection as well. I love her blog because if you see something you like you can buy it from her website. Also she is tall and curvy so when she wears something I can kind of have an Idea what it might look like on me. Love seeing other curvy bloggers! Her blog can be found here.138

Audrey I happened to randomly stumble upon while going through my instagram feed and followed her after just seeing one picture.  On top of being so adorable, I love her style.  I feel like in a way we are a bit similar in that we don’t fit into one specific kind of style, but take from different styles to put together stylish outfits.  I also like that she is studying to be a journalist (totally would I would have done in my other life!).  Her blog can be found here.139

I hope you guys enjoy these installments of FBF! When I find things that I like, I love to share, so check out these guys 🙂
