Can a dress be sporty?

Hello dears and happy Tuesday!

Hope you are having a wonderful week so far. This week I’m taking a little break from Work Wednesday with this post (so I won’t be posting tomorrow )  also with it being so close to the end of the year, I’m thinking of ways to revamp or change up my blog… Stay tuned..  Anyhow, let’s get to it shall we? So my title is, can a dress be sporty? What do you guys think? I found this sport dress from Diamonds in the Rough (DIR) Fashion. The pictures on the website were cute, the dress looked like it would be extremely comfortable especially as like a weekend casual look. So I couldn’t decide if I wanted the navy or gray or both! I decided to go with navy first since it is winter. Plus I thought the dark color would possibly be a little slimming, and I wasn’t at all sure if I was going to fit this dress.

If you have followed my blog, then you know part of my challenge in finding dresses is that I’m quite tall. Mostly when I look at the sizing on many of the Muslim online shops, the length is 58in standard. I usually need 61in, though I will settle for a 60in. The other challenge I have is I have gained some weight recently and I’m Definitely on the chunky side at the moment, and again many of these sites do NOT have plus size dresses. Sooo imagine my surprise to see that the size was XL AND the length was 60in??? I figured I would give this dress a try. PLUS it is VERY affordable!

So here are some pics of the sport dress. It was a bit tight, however, it was also very comfortable. I’m big on material- I don’t really like some of the really cheap polyesters/rayons because they garments do not last as long sometimes. The material of this dress is a bit stretchy and feels very soft like a pair of sweats. If they had a larger size, I would go up one more size so the dress could be a bit looser on top around my chest and arms. Another super cute thing about this dress is that it has a hood. So it is like a hoodie and a dress all in one.

I wore this dress two different ways. The first, I tried to dress it up a bit with heels and the second look is with sneakers and has a more casual look. I would say overall I’m happy with this dress and happy that DIR Fashion sells larger and longer clothing items! I will definitely be ordering from them again.

OOh AAAND I have to apologize about these pictures, the lighting is horrible! Trying to take pictures in these cloudy winter days is a challenge to say the least!

HijabFest!

Hello!

Ok so I’m super excited about the next couple of blog posts. On September 13th I went to Hijabfest in New Jersey. But what is Hijabfest you may be asking?? So that I do not misquote things, here is an excerpt from the Hijabfest website. “HijabFest is a celebration of one of the largest markers of faith, the head-covering Muslim women wear in obedience to their Lord. It was launched in 2013 by the New Brunswick Islamic Center community, and is not entering its third year. HijabFest is an annual event held in New Brunswick and a Facebook page that shares uplifting stories about women in hijab.” This year the theme was unlocking the potential within. There were speakers discussing body image- which I loved because many of us struggle with body image. And at the end new hijabis were brought up to the stage and crowned. So sweet!

This celebration includes fashion shows that showcase modest designers collections, a bazaar, lunch, contests, cook-off and more. I was super excited because I wanted to go last year but couldn’t due to a scheduling conflict. So this year, I not only attended, I also was able to model, and cover the event for my blog. it was sooooo fun…

So let’s start off giving an overview of the event. The Fest started off with the opening of the Hijab salon and the #OOTD contest (which went on until later in the afternoon). Here is the winner! Gorg right?

I must say that I missed the beginning of the show as I was back stage getting makeup done and getting ready to be in the fashion show… omg so exciting aaaak!  Ok ok, so apparently I missed a presentation by Suzy Ismail and Sara Zayed about the potential within us. I was in the very first show modeling for one of my favs Styled by Zubaidah. If you have been following my blog for a while you’ll know I’ve posted about her before. She makes designes specializing in sizes 12-22 and I think recently has branched out to smaller size 10. Her dresses are so pretty. Here is a pic of me on the runway! And pics of Zubaidah and models.

Since I only modeled in the first show, I got to cover the rest of the event and it was great! Other designers that showed in the fashion show were Aabideen, B.Zarina, Graffiti and Gold, Amelia Designs, Beaute Cache, Guzel, Bulbul clothing, Paradise Fashion and Urban Modesty. Click on the names and they link to the websites (if they have a website). You should definitely check all of the designers out! Here are some videos of the runway and of the designs so you can judge for yourself.

If you haven’t heard of ESHAKTI, you must read this!

So I’ve been waiting to do this blog post for awhile and I’m very excited about it. Eshakti is one of my absolute favorite places to get dresses. I mean I could basically be their poster child as much as I’ve been ordering from them and screaming from the rooftops how much I love them. I’ve been ordering from Eshakti for like 8 or 9 years now. In fact I found them randomly while searching for a website for tall maxi dresses. Because I’m 5’10” it is challenging to find maxi dresses that come to the floor (how I like them). So basically I have been ordering from them before everyone knew about them lol.  Anyway, why do I love this website so much???

  1. They sell sizes 0-36W!!! I mean seriously is that a range or what? Almost anyone can find their size, and if you can’t, that brings me to the second reason why I love Eshakti.
  2. Custom sizing!!! You can put in your measurements and they will make the garment to your measurements. You would think that would be super expensive, but NO, custom sizing is only an additional $7.50 to the price of the garment. And if it is your first time ordering custom is free.
  3. Custom styling options. Ok if the affordable custom sizing wasn’t a sell, this will be. Most garments have a custom style option, for example you can change the sleeves, or neckline or even length. I looooooove this because I can add sleeves to a sleeveless dress.
  4. Lastly, if use promotion code “faiscloset”  you can get an additional 10% off!!!! (Valid from 6/23/15-7/23/15)

If I didn’t say it already, you MUST check out Eshakti! Whether you are tall, or short, skinny or curvy, you can definitely find something on this website. Here are some of the dresses that I have ordered and had custom made. I also included the original picture of the dress so you can see the changes I got. I would say the only “con” if you call it a con, is that because every item is custom made you cannot get express or overnight delivery. I have found delivery takes anywhere from 2-4 weeks depending on what it is I ordered. So if you have an event coming up you would need to plan ahead. They do send you a tracking number once your order has shipped and if you have an issue you can return the item. I also found customer service to be great. They quickly respond to emails. Oh and I must not forget to mention the quality of the materials used. I have a couple of dresses I ordered like 5 years ago and they are still in perfect condition as if I just ordered them.

This is a Cowl neck stripe knit maxi. I had sleeves added to this dress. The left is how the dress was on sale on the website. The right is how I wore it with sleeves. This dress is a cotton knit and feels very cool for the summer. This one isn’t lined, but it isn’t see through either. Unfortunately this dress is out of stock at the moment, but they frequently bring styles back.

This is the Cowl neck hacci knit maxi dress. Again this dress was originally sleeveless and I opted for sleeves. Material is a stretchy knit so I didn’t custom size the arms because I figured with stretchy material it would fit and it did! This dress is very thin and cool for summer, however you need a slip because it is almost a bit see through depending on the lighting. Another view of this dress. I love how the dress color looks different in different lighting. Here I wore it with a cardigan for work. Oh and did I mention it has POCKETS?! Pockets are a custom styling option on most dresses too, so if you don’t like them you can opt to remove them, but who doesn’t love pockets?

Sorry the pic on the left is blurry. Here is the Cowl neck abstract print jersey dress. Another sleeveless dress I got sleeves added to. This dress is lined so no need for layering and it has a bit of a stretch. I usually get length “full length with 3 in heels” to ensure the dress will be long enough for me. This one I could wear with flats if I wanted. It can be found here- http://www.eshakti.com/shop/Dress/Cowl-neck-abstract-print-jersey-maxi-dress-CL0035857

Close-up of the details of the dress. This dress is also a stretchy knit. This one has lining so it is not see through. Bag is from http://www.shoptarb.com/ . Shoes are Steve Madden.

It also has POCKETS! And cute belt detailing.
